BTW, Andy Glew's defection to AMD probably means that Yamhill is indeed dead, as first reported by Magee. Andy was one of the earliest and most vocal proponents of 64-bit extensions for x86.

If true, it would be very significant development. It means full steam ahead for Itanium, damn the torpedos. Intel is going to have to figure out how to bring Itanium to high volume and to desktop, which is a transition industry is going to be extremely reluctant to undertake. It would create a huge opening for AMD Hammer.

It's a very high risk strategy for Intel, IMO.

Defection? I'm not so sure. I remember Vin Dham who "resigned for personal reasons" immediately after the Pentium FPU problem, only to join AMD and get fired there as well. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions if I were you...
