I can see your point. Should we minimize or cover up the flaws in the banking and accounting systems for the sake of preserving foreign and domestic investor confidence? Or let William Lerach run wild with his conspiracy theories about banking complicity in the billions lost by state pension funds while they were all taking a Disney ride called Investment Pirates of the Carribean? Tough choice.

Trouble is, coverups tend to unravel. Investor confidence is unpredictable and unmanageable. Grandstanding in Congress for the sake of short term political gains could indeed cause greater damage.
