From Beefing dot com.

General Commentary
After ceding leadership to the DJIA over the past couple of weeks the Nasdaq reclaimed its spot in the limelight, leading the market broadly lower... Tech-heavy index plunged 53.66 points, or 4.2%, to 1228.99 - its lowest level in more than 5 years... Techs were hit hard by additional losses in the telecom, (-7.9%) software (-5%), networking (-5%) and semiconductor (-5%) industries... Among the more notable losers were Microsoft (MSFT 43.01 -7.1%), BEA Systems (BEAS 5.67 -12.5%), Veritas (VRTS 16.75 -5.2%), Computer Associates (CA 8.08 -20.9%), QLogic (QLGC 38.03 -8.4%), Cisco (CSCO 12.50 -3.7%), BellSouth (BLS 21.30 -1.31), Verizon (VZ 27.43 -1.22), Lucent (LU 1.65 -21.4%), JDS Uniphase (JDSU 2.84 -15%), Ciena (CIEN 4.43 -11%), PMC-Sierra (PMCS 9.11 -10.4%), Applied Micro (AMCC 4.09 -13.2%), Lattice (LSCC 6.87 -8.4%), Applied Materials (AMAT 15.58 -7.4%), Novellus (NVLS 26.75 -9.5%), Kulicke & Soffa (7.59 -14.2%) and Teradyne (TER 15.35 -11.3%).

While we would like to think that the relatively decent sales/earnings news delivered after the close by the likes of ATVI, AMZN, PRSE, FLEX, AFCI, NEWP, EXPE, NTIQ, NSCN, PRSE and LRCX would give the sector a lift, it's doubtful... Market psychology is just so dark right now that the emphasis is on the negatives - real or perceived... Briefing.com still of the belief that institutional investors waiting for either an outside catalyst (such as confirmed death of bin Laden) or one more big sell-off before (re)entering the long-side... Based on recent actions, the latter seems far more likely than the former.

Big names that fell to new lows in Tuesday's trading included Microsoft (MSFT), Siebel (SEBL), AT&T (T), SBC Communications (SBC), BellSouth (BLS), Verizon (VZ), Computer Associates (CA), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Teradyne (TER), Apple (AAPL) and Nokia (NOK).
