I've always maintained that having an alliance with the USA is irrelevant because if they don't want to defend us, they won't and if they do want to defend us, they'll do so whether we want them to or not. What they do will depend on how they see their interests. In WWII, the USA did NOT lend a hand until Japan decided to have a go at them to bust the blockade. When Indonesia was rampaging over East Timor, the USA [Kissinger] was unconcerned and even in favour, despite the unpleasant proximity to Australia. When France conducted terrorist operations in NZ, the USA laughed out loud [Schultz making snide remarks about sending messages in a bottle] - but now the USA is keen to have support since terrorists are having a go at them. Similarly, Taiwan will be defended or not, depending on how the USA views the position in China, whether Taiwan wants to be defended or not. If Taiwan invites China to take over, the USA might find Taiwanese regime change is appropriate to avoid potential threats against the USA. Democratic decisions do NOT necessarily meet with USA approval and can result in excommunication and even attack. Claiming to be a democracy is irrelevant [admiration of democracy is only for sloganeering purposes in the USA]. Suggest the world be run on democratic principles, universal human rights etc and see how much support the USA offers. No way Jose! Mqurice
