Texas Instruments (TXN) 23.48 +0.09: Shares hold steady on co's in line Q2 report and guidance ($0.10 for Q3) and analysts neutral opinions; firms remain upbeat on co's long-term outlook (pending an IT spending recovery) but cautious on valuation. Morgan Stanley notes TXN's book/bill was greater than 1.0 and orders grew 19% q/q and maintains their Overweight rating. SG Cowen is encouraged by co's "blow-out" qtr but remains concerned that a lack of compelling 2.5G data services could result in carriers reducing prices, creating an inventory issue in H2. Lehman Brothers is more cautious and maintains their Mkt Perform rating on the strength of demand in H2.

Novellus (NVLS) 26.75 -2.80: Stocks slips 9.5% on disappointing Q3 guidance last night (to $250 mln and $0.10 vs consensus of $258.4 mln and $0.14); analysts express frustration that chip maker's H1 order acceleration reversed its course in Q3. CSFB believes poor end mkt growth will mute order rates and limit stock appreciation. Deutsche Securities believes Street 2002/2003 ests are still "too high" (firm 2003 est is 50% lower than consensus) and expects near-term presure to persist as further reductions to Street ests, cost cutting, and high valuation keep pressure on stock... In a more optimistic take, Bank of America calls a bottom for shares, noting NVLS currently trades at 2.3x book with the trough in 1998 at 1.9x book; anticipates more positive news in the upcoming qtrs to create a rally.
