You mentioned something I've been preaching without success for the past nearly 30 years -- clean water is the greatest environment challenge we face in the 21st century. Not nuclear waste, not landfill, not even overpopulation, thought that's close. But clean water.

We live on a limited well. We have learned to use water carefully. But when I go into the homes of friends who live on city water systems and watch them waste hundreds of gallons of clean, drinkable water on nothings, it distresses me.

We view water as an unlimited commodity. But in fact, clean water is getting increasingly scarce even in this country, and there are countries where it barely exists.

The West is not JUST a "life support system for THEIR WANTS.. For example, to drill ANWAR, for 60 days of oil is shear ignorance at the best, or shear greed at the worst.

The oil would not be gone in 60 days. The amount of oil might only supply the US for 60 days if it was our only source, but unless we are going to find another Saudi Arabia almost any find will only be "60 days of oil supply" or less. Its apparently a very big find. Its foolish to leave it out of bounds forever, although I don't think there is really a need to rush in and start drilling at the earliest opportunity.

As for the west as a "life support system" for the wants of the east, frequently its the people from the east seeking a higher degree of environmental protection in the west while the people in the West, who stand to lose the use of a lot of land are told to accept it because its "for the environment".
