I went as far back as January 2, 1987 to check on advancing NYSE volume. Yesterday was the first day that advancing NYSE volume exceeded 2 billion shares. Declining volume exceeded 2 billion shares twice since 1987--September 17, 2001 and 4 trading days ago on July 19. The most negative numbers that I keep for the NYSE arrived on July 23, 2002.

This has been a historic week. The sellers have been called. Now it is their turn to play their cards.
