11:46 ET Brazilian stocks take over New Low leadership : Among the few US-based names hitting new 52-wk lows today are Synaptics (SYNA 5.27 -1.73), Xcel Energy (XEL 5.95 -1.60), Broadwing (BRW 1.83 -0.27). Shares of Brazilian companies such as Companhia Vale Do Rio Doce (RIO 23.90 -0.20), Banco Bradesco (BBD 14.17 -0.23), AmBev (ABV 13.00 -0.35) and Companhia Energetica De Minas Gerais (CIG 8.04 -0.30) are the standouts on the new low list today. The Brazilian ISHARES (EWZ 7.30 -0.25) have also ticked to a new low.

I there any way to avoid default? It makes no sense for either IMF or Brazil to continue the cycle of borrowing to pay interest. Wouldn't be surprised to see a situation similar to Russia 1998 when the IMF procrastinated until Russia defaulted and finally fixed their own problems. I think O'Neil is right on this one. -Z
