I've found the VXN to be a much better indicator of the COMP and the market in general these past few weeks. When the VIX dropped big and wasn't confirmed by the VXN, that divergence always pointed to more down.

I like to see the VXN decline in a 45-degree angle across an intra-day chart to know it is falling for real. Across 2-days is better confirmation.
