heatsinker, Re: "Intel shoots its wad for '02, nothing left for 1st half of '03."

One has to wonder which would be the better option: releasing products over time that all slightly lag behind the competitor's product, or to give everything you've got early, and try to beat the initial version of the competitor's product right off the bat. Intel may be trying to get a product out by the end of the year that outperforms AMD's first Hammer product, thus taking the majority of the wind from their sales. Subsequent Hammer releases may gain the performance crown eventually, but the PR lost from the initial release may make those versions less of an event.

I'm not too impressed with what the Inquirer thinks is in Intel's 2003 roadmap, but I have a feeling that the "leaked" documents that they managed to obtain were intentionally conservative. Such has been Intel's tactic for the past year, even though they managed to "pull in" the 2.53GHz and 2.8GHz Pentium 4 chips, and now the 2GHz Celeron and 3.06GHz Hyperthreaded Pentium 4. Guiding conservatively allows customers to be somewhat ready, while still keeping the competition guessing. I have a hard time believing that Intel can't get any more juice from a .09u Prescott than they did for the .13u Northwood.

Also, in terms of heat and power concerns, these may be irrelevant if Hammer comes with comparable specs. If 2-2.2GHz Hammer chips can't outperform 3.06GHz Hyperthreaded Pentium 4 chips, then I doubt that AMD will have a sizable advantage before Prescott. JMHO.

heatsinker, maybe Intel is taking a page out of Nvidia's book. Release your best chipset for Xmas. That's where most of the money is made for the year....
