I remember when I was in school there were a lot of kids who were just slow, or "stupid"- and they were probably kids with learning disabilities that hadn't been found yet. We had quite a few of those kids. I don't know how much incidence has increased if you norm for better reporting and better identification. But it wouldn't surprise me if something in the environment caused it. Of course it wouldn't surprise me if it is just a random genetic thing, either. I have no beliefs about it at the present time.
