Very true. However, in 1982 the public wasn't shorting like today.

And because of the huge open short interest not only by the public and hedge funds, but also record short positions by the commitment of traders, you have the combustible ingredients for massive buying from both Bulls and Bears the likes we have never seen before in our lifetimes.

Today's market has many similarities to 1974 that I have not even touched on... save that for another day.
