The economy follows the financial markets. The financial markets lead the economy.

Interesting, and unusual way to express it. More conventional way to say that the markets are a reflection of what is most likely going to happen in the economy as a whole. I am not sure how good is the record of the markets in in predicting the future.

The gov't had better wake up.

If the government is asleep, I would prefer it to stay that way. After the dismal failure of the Japanese government in propping up their markets, I hope our government will not attempt to do the same.
