Silly me, I know. But isn't the abandonment of UMTS the necessary precondition to a EURO carrier deploying GSM1X in existing spectrum, especially if 1x continues to prove itself in the mkt. place? As devastating as the UMTS fantasy has been to Sonera and Telefonica's balance sheet, surely they can find the couple of hundred million needed to do GSM1X if they can be convinced of the merits. This in turn could set in motion a sequence of events where other EURO UMTS projects fall like dominoes, which in turn could be the stake in the heart of UMTS worldwide.

I know this UMTS abandonment will be seen as a negative for QCOM, but if we could get just one major GSM1X system up and running in Europe....what fun that would be. And don't think for a moment that the good folk at QCOM-Europe won't be dropping by Sonera and Telefonica to say hello.

Another chink in the armor.
