Apple could recode OSX to run on x86 clone hardware but that would be a major mistake in my opinion. There is still too much variation in hardware on the x86 side over which Apple would have no control. OSX would most likely run no better and possibly worse than Windows if it were released to that vast variety of hardware. Microsoft has a much larger coding team than Apple and they often don't get it right.

If Apple chose x86 as their next architecture in their own machines, they certainly could get that to work as they would have full control over the design.

OSX might be an interesting system for other unix machines like Sun or SGI though, as there isn't as much variety of hardware there.
