As for a majority not supporting a United States of Europe

At mm.dk there is a chart displaying results of polls that show that the members or EU states who think that EU membership is a good thing has decline from about 70% in 1990 and 1991 to about 50% in the 1995 to 2001 time frame.

I've seen other pools that show declineing support for the EU, and also lack of support for making the EU in to one nation. The politicians are way ahead of the people on this one.

Tim, the first link is from the UK, and the last two from Denmark. Both countries have had trouble with the EU concept and the populations of both have decided that they don't want to join at this time. Inevitably, they will join because they will have to or the Scandinavian coalition will have to become much tighter to survive economically.

Besides, the polls you show were just before the EU went into effect and people were understandably nervous. Things are calming down now and there is less apprehension although its not completely gone.

This is the wave of the future. When Russia joins the EU, we will have no choice but to form our own Union with Canada and Mexico. Eventually, there will be these large trading blocs throughout the world which will act as the first step in establishing a world gov't. Don't worry too much though......its not likely we will see it. And I wouldn't worry too much about treaties taking away our sovereignty......eventually we will give up our sovereignty willingly for the greater good.
