One thing about the possibility for interstellar wars. If we do encounter extra terrestrial aliens the odds are that they will not be at about the same level of technological development that we are at. Assuming a vast difference in technology it won't be much of a war but rather a slaughter, or just an annexation if that is what the more powerful group wants.

The distance makes it less likely. Sure you could send a fleet across the stars at less then 1c, but it will take awhile and probably be expensive. If the two sides are at about the same level of technology, the defender will be advancing while the attackers fleet slowly moves towards its enemy. However if ftl travel can be and is invented (or has been invented by ETs) then all those factors probably disappear.
