If we do encounter extra terrestrial aliens the odds are that they will not be at about the same level of technological development that we are at. Assuming a vast difference in technology it won't be much of a war but rather a slaughter, or just an annexation if that is what the more powerful group wants. Tim, what does interstellar wars have to do with AMD?!!! I should have known you were into sci-fi. <g> As for your supposition, since we are no where close to interstellar travel, and should we meet up with aliens, then its very likely we will be the ones slaughtered, or annexed. Lets hope that in terms of the evolutionary time frame, we are leading the curve. ;~))The distance makes it less likely. Sure you could send a fleet across the stars at less then 1c, but it will take awhile and probably be expensive. If the two sides are at about the same level of technology, the defender will be advancing while the attackers fleet slowly moves towards its enemy. However if ftl travel can be and is invented (or has been invented by ETs) then all those factors probably disappear. Interstellar travel requires some kind of break through in terms of being able to travel multiple times faster than light. Unless the theories re worm holes are true, the likelihood of us developing such travel is probably hundreds of years away. Assuming that most species began the climb up the evolutionary ladder about the same time, most likely an unlikely probability, we have no way of knowing whether we are moving up quickly or not. Its always been the contention of most sci fi authors that we are advancing very quickly but that theory is based purely on ego and not fact. Its why as much as I would like to meet aliens, I would not object to the negative. ted
