The problem with having a school system that acts that way is that those children who really need special services in order to be productive citizens do not get the services and they become adults unable to contribute.

The flip side is that they were taken care of by their families and not expected to contribute and their presence didn't distract the school system from turning regular kids into contributing adults. I don't have a basis for an opinion on which scenario is better overall.

Schools have to be demanding to be effective, because the world sure is. You've probably seen "Lean on Me" (1989) with Morgan Freeman as a high school principal who specializes in tough love. Great feel good movie….
