All kids are different which is of course a consideration for educators and parents alike. I do believe in general schools have become too lax. An example would be the teacher which was discussed here some time back that ended up resigning after she failed some students for plagiarism and their parents went ballistic that she was being unfair.

It is more crucial for the children in special education that they achieve what is possible than it is for a gifted under-achiever who might only attain a mediocre standard of living. Potential consequences of under-achievement for learning disabled children are likely to be much more dire.

I tend to push my kids more than my wife does, but I think it is the combination of us both which is most beneficial. Without me she would have to be harder on them and without her I would have to be easier. However regardless of expectations, children should always know their parents love them.
