had a PE of 12/3 in 1990 and 13.9 in 1995

OK, let's look at PE. Currently the FY03 average is .71 per Yahoo, giving AMAT a forward PE of 20. Using the high end of the range, there is an estimate of .95; this would give AMAT a PE of 15! And their FY begins in only a little over 3 months.

which had unbelievably good growth prospects

I would argue that INTC's dominance or position in its industry could never meet AMAT's of today, in terms of overall market share, Cash, and Backlog.

One more thing to add, Coca-Cola is now trading at over 24X next years earnings, yet will have a growth rate a fraction that of AMAT going forward. Add in that their FY starts 2 months later than AMAT's!
