We survived what Nixon did, we'll survive what Clinton did.

Clinton will be forgiven before Nixon because Nixon's public persona was harsh, abrasive, almost sinister, while Clinton's demeanour was more that of a boy with his hand in the cookie jar and crumbs on his face denying that he'd been eating cookies. This has nothing to do with substance, and everything to do with image.

Despite all, I think it would be hard to make a case for the contention that the nation is a weaker or a poorer place today than it was a decade ago.
