Italian UMTS licenses lengthened

09:51 Friday July 26, 2002, Telecom.paper

The Italian government agreed to lengthen UMTS licences from 15 years to 20 years, Italian communications minister Maurizio Gasparri said, according to an AFX media report. Each operators which won a licence two years ago, will see a EUR 46 million annual cut in amortisation of its UMTS licence after government reform, the minister added. The ministry has estimated that the amortisation of an operator will decrease from EUR 184 million to EUR 138 million each year, he said. The change in the legislation was agreed in principle by the government last December. In Italy TIM, Vodafone Omnitel, Wind, H3G and IPSE 2000 have UMTS licenses.
