'Day Tripper' Queen Elizabeth Pays Call on Beatles
Thu Jul 25, 5:16 PM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Queen Elizabeth II ( news - web sites) took a day trip to the hometown of the Beatles on Thursday, rechristening its airport in honor of John Lennon and attending an exhibition of paintings by Sir Paul McCartney.

The queen unveiled a plaque at Liverpool's airport, now named in honor of Lennon, who was killed by a crazed fan in New York in 1980.

Alongside Lennon's widow Yoko Ono, Queen Elizabeth viewed the airport's new bronze statue, which depicts Lennon striding purposefully through a corridor.

Later she stopped by Liverpool's renowned Walker art gallery, where McCartney showed her around his first exhibit of paintings.

McCartney, who once sang "Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl, some day I'm gonna make her mine," said he thought the queen liked his brightly colored, mainly abstract artwork.

"I think she liked them, she was interested in them, she said they had strong colors. You know, I'm not sure that's her taste in art, but she seemed interested," McCartney said.

"I talked about how I'd painted them, and she seemed quite happy with them."

The British monarch was not shown one of his paintings, titled "The Queen After Her First Cigarette."

Did you hear they renamed Heathrow(sp) airport yesterday?

Your spelling is fine, but Heathrow is a long way from Liverpool, mate!
