I've met Gore in person a couple of times. In person he is bright, quick, personable and witty. In other words the exact opposite from the guy you see on TV. I think the biggest reason these politicians look like such dolts is because they are coached to dumb it down to what the polsters think is the average American's intelligence level.

Well, some of them can pull the act off -- Clinton was a case in point. Gore struck me as a mind paralysed by caution. I remember a reporter who interviewed him late in the 2000 campaign, and was so frustrated by his careful non-answers to all questions that he titled the interview "Al Gore: Live But Not in Person"
