Actually I just did it. And it isn't bad at all as long as you use differentiated instruction. But the principal who observed me said she would go nuts trying to keep track of all the different levels and modifications. I use several clip boards to keep track of what everyone is doing. And a lot of the kids do their own record keeping on their progress, which helps keep the workload down.

Since some of the kids who come to us very low come from homes that are deficient in some way, it is necessary to simulate the home environment (imo) to get them up to speed on what we would have hoped the parental language inputs would have been. I think your method might work, but it would be prone to the prejudice of low expectations. As you know teachers who think students are going to fail, often influence their failure. Students who were in this lower primary area for a long time, would inevitably be classed as slow by many teachers. I think this might affect their development greatly. We've all known kids who jump up over the summer, get a new teacher, and get to start fresh. I do agree with you that there are children who are not as ready, but with differentiated instruction they can all be taught (imo).
