For some reason I equated IBM's leadership in magnetic technology for drive heads with good hard drive products. Apparently they have a bad reputation for reliability over the last few years. See the StorageReview article on the 120GXP series: storagereview.com I'll probably go with the Western Digital w/8MB buffer which StorageReview gives top rating. I've had my Maxtor drives for a few years now and I'm wondering if some of my Windows flakiness could be attributed to them. Also, I've got the two drives stacked with no space between, so I'm wondering if heat is a problem. Seagate is supposed to bring out the first serial ATA drive possibly in September. Motherboard support sometime in 2003. Sounds like a nice new technology. pcworld.com Of course, probably better to wait till it's been out for a while. More on Serial ATA: In addition to fast 150-Mbyte-per-second data transfers, the new Serial ATA interface available this fall will offer features that improve design capabilities for PC makers: intelligent data handling, hot plug capability, a point-to-point connection from the drive to the host without the need for master/slave jumper settings, and thinner, longer cables with snap-in connectors that simplify installation, improve overall system dynamics and enable innovative small form-factor designs. Serial ATA will provide easier and better connectivity, much greater system expandability, and better data reliability with 32-bit Cyclic Redundancy Checking protection on command data as well as data on the bus. Its speed, intelligence and simplicity will enable a future of data-intensive and entertainment-heavy content delivered via PCs, home network hubs and Consumer Electronics devices.seagate.com storagesearch.com
