They rely entirely on the ham hocks for taste.

At Popeye's the beans get almost all their taste from salt, lots of salt. When I buy them, I take them home and mix them together with a can of unsalted kidney beans. Otherwise the salt taste is too strong. But I still love them. Sigh!
