Clark,

I used to optimize GSM networks in Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. I thought the networks there were particularly good (of course I am biased!) but typical dropped call rates were always < 2% and blocked calls were right around there as well. That was more than 2 years ago so maybe operators have less to spend there now.

<Also note that Europe, with their greater population density, should nominally have better coverage for the same cost>. Not really, achieving good quality in a noise limited environment is far easier than achieving it in an interference limited scenario, which would be typical for european operators.

my own anecdote: I lived for 6 months in Berlin and had service with Deutsche Telecom...I cannot remember dropping a single time...seriously...even in the subway
