Extreme Actions Underway for Publicly Held Small Companies
October 14, 2002...We're seeing stepped up buying and selling of small companies, along with the increase of startup shut-downs and plant closings. Some, like Schott and OCP, are not only doing some outright buying of distressed smaller companies, but are "restructuring" internally in an effort to be prepared if things get even worse (see news this issue.) But some are taking control into their own hands... especially those with some actual cash in the bank to do so. Take Kopin Corporation as an example, which has announced that its Board of Directors has authorized the repurchase of up to $15 million in Kopin common stock. "Kopin's management and Board of Directors believe that implementing a stock repurchase program represents an opportunity to enhance shareholder value by capitalizing on current market conditions," said Dr. John C.C. Fan, Kopin's president and CEO. "Given the Company's strong financial position and product leadership, this program further demonstrates our belief in Kopin's long-term growth opportunities." Other companies are trying something a bit more radical, such as Stratos and Nortel, which are doing reverse stock splits as a means of keeping their publicly held share prices above the dangerous $1 level that gets them delisted from their exchange. Survival of the fittest is at work, and cash in the bank to buy back ones own company appears to be one of the smartest ways to position for dominance when and if the recovery actually happens.
