Perhaps, but I don't think so. Like many of our institutions, unions serve primarily unions, not the workers they represent. Kind of like the way the Catholic Church supported the Church rather than the parishioners. And, as I heard speculated on TV today, the leaks on the various Iraq war plans are aimed at increasing the heft of various parts of the military.

I don't mind waving an occasional flag in the general direction of unions out for respect for their historical contribution rather as I'm prepared to acknowledge a ceremonial deity in the Pledge. It's when people don't recognize the that it's a symbol.
