Another summer book recommendation, given that we are talking about the Web.

Small Pieces Loosely Joined by Dave Weinberger.

Both passionate and reasoned, Weinberger asks "What is the Web?" and "What does it reveal about us?". He sees the web not as a tool we use but as a world we inhabit. The world of the web is structured by human interest rather than space and time. He has a very optimistic view of the web without becoming a pitchman for the next big thing.

He does a Heiddegerian analysis of the Web. I was quite impressed how close he sticks to Heiddeger's vision with imposing any of the jargon. It may be the best introduction to Heidegger I have read and I have read them all.

Dave is a large presence on the Web. Google his name or the name of the book if you want to explore his thinking before forking over the time and money to read the book.

I think that's been one of the dangers of the Internet from the start
I think what we are seeing is the infinite variety that is available. Lets take the "Micro" case here. There are threads on SI that are totally left or right, but most of the people here do not post to them. Why? They want to hear different viewpoints and discuss them.

I agree but the presence of those other threads points to the issue. I don't think it's too much of a problem unless the general media begins to break down into politicized ghettos. That's one of the reasons I'm troubled by all the talk that, in the interests of honesty and integrity, each media outlet should become its politics. Perhaps that worry is a little over the top. But then the only other thing I have to worry about right now is the heat and downstairs paint fumes.

Taking a break but running every air conditioner at full blast.
