Eminent domain would have been needed by the private concerns. I'm not sure many of us could stomach the kind of dislocation the interstate system required for the profit of private concerns. It was bad enough to have the government plow through eight lanes of inner city real estate.

You might have a point for giving the railroads extra leeway by calling them transportation companies and building the necessary freight roads.

My view: Some things are better handled by the government. Not many, but some. Highways is one.
