South Korean wanted for gold fraud arrested in Manila
Mon Aug 5, 2:23 AM ET

MANILA, Philippines - A South Korean man wanted for allegedly making off with dlrs 1 million in a gold scam has been arrested in Manila, immigration officials said Monday.

Lee Bong-goo, 37, who owned a jewelry shop in Seoul, was arrested Friday after the South Korean Embassy in Manila sought police help, the officials said.

Lee allegedly got two South Koreans to give him money to buy gold bars but fled with the cash to Hong Kong. He then came to Manila in July after learning Seoul authorities had issued an arrest warrant.

He was wanted for large-scale fraud and tax evasion.

Lee, who had been coming to the Philippines as a tourist in recent years, has now been banned from returning, officials said. He was detained at the immigration jail in Manila prior to deportation.
