KLP,

The US was predominantly isolationist and internally focused due to the economic issues of the day. Even after the war began in Europe in 39, much sentiment went into staying out of the European war. We pretty much ignored the Chinese and Etheopian situations.

I don't know about the Times, but the majority of US opinion pieces in that era reflected these same moods, but there were people who knew better.

Forunately, this included the President and he was able to orchestrate as much preparation as he could get through Congress.
