The ink cost can add up pretty quickly as well, though, if you do print a lot of pics...

Just out of curiosity, how many 4X6 pictures do you estimate from a color cartridge and what is the typical cost? I frankly doubt the average consumer would ever calculate the total cost (paper plus ink plus computer/printer/software amortization) but it would be interesting to know. Selling more ink is very good for HPQ...a gross margin of >90% I recall, and so far I don't think refillers are taking a big bite out of it!
