So what happens if the ones who pay less under the new licensing scheme are the ones who continue to use MSFT code, and the ones who don't upgrade often anyway, faced with increased costs as an additional incentive, switch to alternatives? That seems like a fairly realistic scenario to me, since the ones who already don't upgrade often (a) don't seem as concerned about keeping up with the "latest and greatest" and (b) are accustomed to bigger changes at the time of upgrades, so might be better able to take a vendor switch in stride.

Wouldn't such a scenario result in a net negative to MSFT revenues?
