I think the Wilshire Index is often taken as a measure of total US market cap.

Perhaps, but the market in my opinion is all about future value divided by current valuation, instead of tangible value. I'd think that if one added up the total increase in value of all real estate, it would more than equal the value lost in equities. I do agree the question of what's credible is being worked out. I heard on the way in the door that a trillion in debt has been created in the telco sector.. even with good growth that's a large overhead to struggle with.
