Cheer up, John. Most people subject to long-term unemployment don't even own homes, so they can't become sellers and increase our housing supply. And right now, unemployment is NOT anything close to being historically high, either.

How can we expect to significantly downsize an economy in which the population is growing? Those folks need to buy stuff, eat stuff, wear stuff, furnish their apartments, trailer park homes and McMansions with stuff, and buy insurance to protect it all. Somebody has to provide all these goods and services.
