For its fiscal fourth quarter, ended in June, the Durham, North Carolina-based company reported a net loss of $22.5 million, or 31 cents per share, compared with a year-earlier profit of $6.5 million, or 9 cents per share.

Excluding charges related to the decline in value of its equity investments, the company posted a profit of $975,000, or 1 cent a share. Analysts had forecast a profit of 2 cents a share, within a range of 1 cent or 2 cents, according to tracking firm Thomson First Call.

Revenue in the quarter was $37.8 million, up from $28.6 million in the prior quarter but down from $44.7 million a year earlier.

The company said for the current quarter it expects operating earnings per share of 4 cents on revenue of $45 million, representing revenue growth of 20 percent over the prior quarter, based on strong demand for its LED products.

The First Call estimate for the fiscal first quarter had been for earnings per share of 3 cents, with a range of 2 cents to 4 cents, on revenue of $38.8 million.
