Hot Topic sees flat earnings, lower sales ($21-$16)

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif., July 31 (Reuters) - Specialty
retailer Hot Topic Inc. <HOTT.O> on Tuesday warned that July
sales would fall short of its expectations and second-quarter
earnings would be little changed from a year earlier.
The retailer said it expects second-quarter earnings of 13
cents per share on sales of $92 million. Analysts on average
were expecting earnings of 15 cents per share, according to
research firm Thomson First Call.
Hot Topic said July sales at stores open at least a year,
or same-store sales, would show a decline of 3 percent to 4
percent from a year earlier.
The company also said it anticipates weak same-store sales
in August because of weak back-to-school sales trends. It
forecast earnings of 27 cents to 29 cents a share in the third
quarter, compared with 26 cents a year earlier.
