The only way the US could get into Saudi Arabia without their military fighting against us would be at the invitation of a subset of the Saudis that already had some sort of territory under their control.

If the Saudi military opposed a fundamentalist takeover, they - and others not desiring such a takeover - would be such a subset, and they would probably seek US assistance.

Giving such assistance would set us up for a possibly long and messy intervention, but there would be little choice. A fundamentalist Saudi government would almost certainly be a sponsor and protector of Al Qaeda and similar groups, and after the example of Afghanistan the US cannot allow another such terrorist haven to emerge, particularly if it also has control over enormous reserves of oil.

It would be very ugly, especially if it became necessary for US units to take action near or in the sacred places.
