there are alligators in swamps that have to be planned for

"What if Saddam responds by firing Scuds with chemical or biological warheads at Saudi Arabian and Kuwaiti oilfields? The world market could lose not only Iraq's two million barrels a day, but millions more. And what if the war drags on and we have as much trouble finding Saddam as we've had finding Osama?"

i regret that i have never had the time or taken the time to read major usa newspapers (like ny times) from 1939-1942. i imagine there were a lot of handwringing and worrying type articles in those papers. maybe i will get a chance to perform this interesting task one day.

when the usa decided war against japan was going to happen, i don't think they stopped to worry about how far away japan was and that the war was going to impact the economy.

it is amusing that friedman can see the clear and present danger of skuds with bad chemicals and bio weapons being used, but he does not seem to address the issue of "so damn insane's" having skuds with nuclear weapons or missles with nuclear weapons. when you Have to drain a swamp, one knows ahead of time that there will be alligators in the swamp. one has to plan the best one can for the alligators and the harm they may do despite the best planning. the job is still to drain the swamp.
