Was hoping you'd weigh in on this one...

I have been following that discussion. I don't have a very strong opinion on it, which is why I didn't weigh in before.

It seems to me that the addition of the bit about black hawk was not flattering to Clinton. The quote with that segment missing is more favorable to him. That's just my impression, of course.

As to why one source would include the entire quote and one would trim it, I don't have much to go on. It seems plausible that one might trim it for Clinton's benefit, as you suggested. It also seems plausible to trim it for word count, as others have suggested. I have no experience with the practices surrounding word count so I don't have a sense of how likely that is. What instinctively seems most likely to me is that it was trimmed because it cluttered the point. I commonly trim out the clutter when I quote something so it doesn't distract from the main point I'm trying to highlight. In this case, the point Clinton was making was that the blame game was one sided. That his example was featured in a movie is not necessary to the point.

Had the sources of the quotes been reversed, I might be more likely to buy your favoritism theory. A newspaper, which might have a POV, might be motivated to show Clinton in a favorable light. I don't see why a news service like AP would be.

So my best guess is that clarity/simplicity was the motivation. But, like I said, there's not much evidence to go on.
