By the magic of his Father's name, he becomes rich and governor....leaving behind a sordid trail of scandalous business dealings...and now the latest... " Reacting to Jeb Bush saying he has "nothing to hide" in the case of alleged bribes regarding a Nigerian water pump deal that has spawned court cases and questions about Bush’s role, Florida Democratic Party Chair Bob Poe today renewed his call for Jeb Bush to release all his records on the deal (including all tax returns going back to 1989) and fully answer all questions regarding his role in the deal and the company. "When it comes to the deal, Jeb Bush can’t get his story straight. Jeb Bush has said he wasn’t involved in the deal but, he traveled to Nigeria, attended a 1,300 horse parade thrown in his honor and met with the president where the water pump company was the chief topic of discussion," Poe said. "It’s time for Jeb Bush to end the doublespeak. If Jeb Bush has nothing to hide, then he should prove it by releasing all his records and answering all the questions surrounding his role with Bush-El and the Nigerian water pump deal." Bush-El was a company formed by Jeb Bush and J. David Eller to market M&W’s industrial water pumps. After investing no money in Bush-El, Jeb Bush sold his interest in the company to Eller and received $648,000. The Broward County-based company eventually became MWI Corp. According to a story appearing in the July 30, 2002 Miami Herald, Eller is facing a lawsuit brought by a former employee named Robert Purcell. Purcell claims that, in 1992, Eller's company, MWI Corp., bribed Nigerian government officials to get them to purchase $74 million of water pumps from the company. The sale was financed by the U.S. Export-Import Bank. The Justice Department has intervened in the case on behalf of Purcell. According to the Herald story, Gov. Bush said he does not want a federal judge to seal records in the case, as his former business partner, J. David Eller, has requested. However, Poe questioned why Gov. Bush would not make public all his records regarding the water pump deal and his activities with Bush-El and M&W Pump. Poe noted Eller apparently continues to be a good friend of Gov. Bush’s. Even as Eller faced a federal legal case on the water pump deal he co-hosted a South Florida fundraiser for Bush in June. The Herald story said that according to attorneys working on the case, Jeb Bush has been added to the list of potential witnesses in the case. Poe noted that in 1998, Jeb Bush successfully avoided giving a deposition in a related case and has not fully answered questions about his involvement in the Nigerian water pump deal and his activities with Bush-El. # # #
