I think the estimates are done by some complex formula based on preliminary data. The problem is that when the economy is in the midst of a shift in psychology and performance, the prediction models tend to be way off. When the economy is in a slow steady climb, it's easy to predict what will happen.

Glad you mentioned that.
Maria B was interviewing this guy, Clarida, asst. secretary for Econo Progress.
She confronted him a couple times with the notion of how they could have missed Q1 so badly.
He kept dodging the question and repeating

"What the investing public needs to know and remember is that the recovery is under way."

Nothing more than spin spin spin.
