A union intends to enter during a desperate situation and forever establish itself regardless of how the situation changes. Yes, it's virtually impossible to get out from under one once it gets in. That's why it's so important for people to really understand what they're getting themselves into before they bring one in. So often it's done rashly in the heat of the moment. I would think a union would be a last resort for dealing with intractable management, not something to do casually with the thought that it couldn't hurt and it might help.
