Wachovia comments on state of retail sector
Wachovia Sec says latest news out of retailers hasn't been so good, as we've seen warnings this week from HOTT (-32.5%), GADZ (-0.5%), GCO (-28%). Firm notes that wholesalers are performing much better with TOM (-5.5%), SHOO (-7.5%), KCP (-4.3%) announcing higher than expected results... Firm believes that a boring mall, exacerbated by a severe lack of clearance inventory to draw summer bargain hunters, may be leading to traffic declines. At this point, firm feeling fairly confident in only its PSUN (-8.5%) est. of a 5.0% increase for the month; thinks URBN (-19%) and ARO (-15.8%) could be at risk.

BBY ($30-$22) taking a large hit this am ---->Best Buy cuts Q2 guidance as sales 'softened significantly' in July (BBY) 30.80: Consumer electronics retailer breaks morning trend of positive earnings preannouncements by slashing its outlook for Q2. BBY now sees EPS of $0.17-$0.21 vs previous guidance of $0.30-$0.32 and the Multex consensus of $0.32. BBY expects same-store sales to be modestly positive vs prior guidance of +4-5%. BBY believes declines in consumer confidence led to the sharp drop off in sales in July. (Sector players include CC, RSH, ULTE, TWTR, RSC, CDWC).

BBY plunges 28% on earnings warning; ULTE falls 28% in sympathy
