Alan - took me two weeks to have my LAN working again after I installed XP Pro.
Installation is so user friendly that you always add a mistake when you thought doing the right thing.

My test was a old portable, 386sx Win 3.11 + 32s wolverine.
Will start to put my results on my web page by soon. Geez!
DON'T READ THE HELP FILES!!!!!

Spare some time, wait for your router to be delivered. Installation will be straightforward.
And your hardware will be compatible with the net Zindoze.NET V2002 or whatever.

What finally worked:
in XP Pro (will not work with XP home),
just run the home network wizard: this installs your "Home LAN" with the fixed 198.162.0.1 AND DHCP services

On your other computers, enable DHCP, suppress static addresses (I also enter 198.162.0.1 as default gateway).
This should work.
However, depending on the fine prints of your ISP, could be that only one computer at the time will be allowed to connect to the Internet. Local LAN should work fine though.
(I also have NetBios enabled: next test will be to use TCP/IP exclusively as MSFT is abandonning support for the protocol).

Btw, I only use the MSFT built-in firewall, no ZoneAlarm yet, have to link my other machines first.
