Doubts over physical demand for the metal, particularly from world number one consumer India, blunted any sharp rally higher, analysts said.

Seasonal rains across India are expected to be lower than usual, increasing the likelihood that farmers will not have a bumper crop in which to make their traditional gold purchases.

"Latest weather information suggests India is experiencing its lightest rainfalls for 15 years...With rainfall reported to be 24 percent below average the outlook for Indian demand this year looks set to be poor," said Howard Patten, metals analyst at Barclays Capital.

John Reade, metals analyst at Switzerland's UBS Warburg agreed that the demand outlook was not promising: "We are receiving reports of very limited physical demand at the moment and this may limit any recovery in the near term."

With no strong demand the market was likely to remain at the mercy of fund speculators, traders said.
